Here are the three most common studies your physician might prescribe:
A Polysomnogram, or PSG is the most reliable test used to diagnose certain sleep disorders. It is an overnight study that measures abnormalities in the sleep cycle.
Small metal discs (called electrodes) are placed on the skin and scalp. These electrodes monitor and record various body functions during sleep. Some functions include: airflow and respiratory effort, blood oxygen levels, blood pressure and heart rate, electrical activity in the brain, eye movement and muscle movement. All devices used during th PSG are designed to be as comfortable as possible.
CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) has approved unattended home sleep studies for certain patients. Although CMS has adopted this new policy, with new billing procedures, they have not announced final reimbursements and how or when providers should proceed. CMS policy is a guide for all other insurance carriers. Certain insurance carriers have set forth similar guidelines, while others are waiting. Check with your carrier for details.
Advanced Sleep is the only fully capable Medicare certified IDTF (Independent Diagnostic Testing Facility) that has developed a patient friendly HUST (Home Unattended Sleep Testing) program that utilizes fully recommended, FDA cleared devices that at minimum measure Air Flow, Oximetry, and Pulse. We are able to record apneas, hypopneas, flow limitations as well as snoring events.
Although a sleep-lab based sleep study (PSG) is the “gold standard” for diagnosis of OSA, HUST (Home Unattended Sleep Testing) may be used to screen for obstructive sleep apnea without the need for a laboratory stay. The goal of sleep apnea diagnosis is to identify patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), to establish the factors responsible for the apnea, and to determine the most appropriate therapy or treatment.
A Home unattended Sleep Study is a diagnostic test which can be performed in your own home if your physician suspects that you have Sleep Apnea and you are unable to travel to one of our sleep Centers for attended overnight sleep studies.
We utilize the latest equipment in advanced diagnostic sleep recording.
CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) Titration is the second part of your sleep study. Nasal CPAP therapy is a Non-Invasive way to treat obstructive sleep apnea.
The patient is fitted with a relatively small, comfortable mask that goes over the nose. This is mask is connected to a CPAP unit, which delivers air through the nose into the back airways.
Initially, the CPAP unit will use a low air pressure. The pressure is gradualy adjusted throughout the night to keep the patient apnea free in all stages of sleep.
The CPAP allows the patient to achieve restful and deep sleep without interruption during the night.

Sleep Apnea in Children
Obstructive sleep apnea is a common problem in children and is increasingly being recognized as a cause of daytime attention and behavioral problems. Childhood obesity is on the rise, along with other medical problems, such as heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes and high blood pressure.
New findings from a community-based study of teens indicate that teens with sleep apnea are at increased risk for heart disease and diabetes and that sleep apnea is a risk factor for metabolic syndrome.
